I had the privilege of presenting a workshop on fabric painting with Setacolor Light Fabric Paint (formerly transparent) to my fellow quilters at the Hearts ‘n’ Hands Quilt Guild. We had a wonderful time exploring our creativity! We sprayed pieces of tone on tone white fabric with paint creating additional visual texture resembling a batik. We also experimented with salt effects, used natural sea sponges to apply paint, and used a scrunching technique to create a variety of fabrics to use in their own quilts.
We used rubber and acrylic stamps with pigment ink stamp pads (permanent on fabric), playing with the arrangement of the flowers, leaves and vines to create similar yet different center blocks for the quilt. Using fabric painting brushes with thickened paint, the participants produced flowers and leaves using shading and highlighting techniques to create realistic images.
We finished up the day with show and tell, with everyone sharing the fabrics they had created. They were so excited seeing what everyone else had created. Many had to make trips to a local fabric store on the way home to purchase some of the tone on tones they had seen in class. We all had a great time learning the various ways this paint could enhance their quilt making.
